California, New York men charged in billion-dollar gambling ring | Reuters

Thompson said he believes the bust is the biggest of its kind to be brought by local prosecutors.

NEW YORK Four California and New York men have been charged in an internet-based sports gambling ring that handled nearly $1 billion in bets during a single football season and ran a team of employees in Costa Rica, prosecutors said on Thursday.

At its peak, the operation had $200,000 in monthly bills including salaries for a team of employees located in San Jose, Costa Rica, who ran a call center for betters, prosecutors said.

Most forms of gambling are illegal in New York state, with legal gambling limited to Indian reservation casinos, betting on horse races and Las Vegas-style casinos.

.

The group operated several password-protected websites that allowed gamblers to place bets on a series of professional and collegiate sports games, prosecutors said. “It preys on peoples’ vulnerabilities and directly leads to money laundering, loansharking and a host of other crimes,” Thompson said.

Gordon Mitchnick, 58, Joseph Schneider, 39, Arthur Rossi, 66, and Claude Ferguson, 43, were charged with crimes including enterprise corruption and first-degree promoting gambling in a 57-count indictment, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement.

Mitchnick is the suspected leader of the ring, which operated in Brooklyn and other areas, prosecutors said. He is accused of purchasing more than 20 houses to help him launder money. Additional arrests are expected in the ongoing investigation.

Clients were solicited by word of mouth and on internet gambling forums.

It was not clear how much money was handled over the life of the operation or for how long it existed.

The defendants face up to 25 years in prison if convicted of the top charge of enterprise corruption, prosecutors said. A toll-free number for wagering was also provided.

“Illegal gambling is not a victimless crime,” Thompson said.

Attorneys for the defendants were not immediately identifiable.

The operation accepted $927 million in wagers on National Football League games during the 2015 season, prosecutors said

College Football Bowl Games

A team must win six games in the season to qualify for playing in a bowl game. A game between Tufts University and Harvard, played on 4 June, 1875, bore some resemblance to its modern-day counterpart, with each team having eleven players, the players being allowed to run carrying the ball and tackle each other, and the ball itself being egg-shaped rather than spherical.

College teams are ranked in the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A) and the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as I-AA). Post-season games are known as college football bowls. Smock (yes, that was really his name), some padding and a thick head with a full hair thatch, was all the protection the players had in the rough and tumble of the game. Serious injuries and even deaths were not unknown, and this led to a public outcry against the game, with some colleges temporarily banning the game, and President Theodore Roosevelt threatening a more permanent ban.

In response to this, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was established, and they issued new rules intended to make the game less deadly. The popularity of college football continued to grow, and was eclipsed only by the sheer brutality of the game. So, it was back to football then. The early players were not armored-up like today-a uniform devised by the Princeton player L.P. These four bowls are the main staple of the BCS championship series, but there are also other bowl games like the Gator Bowl, the Florida Citrus Bowl, and the Alamo Bowl. The forward pass was introduced, and mass momentum plays like the flying wedge tackle were banned. A week later, another game was held on the Princeton home grounds, and this time, Princeton won 8-0. The term ‘bowl’ came about from the shape of the Pasadena Stadium in California, where the first ever bowl game, the Rose Bowl, was played in 1902 between Michigan and Stanford. In both these games, the field was considerably larger than it is today, each team was made up of 25 players, and there were no officials to referee the games.

Shortly thereafter, in 1870, a match was held between Columbia University and Rutgers College, and the sport soon spread to other colleges. The game took place on College Field, which is now the site of Rutgers University’s College Avenue Gymnasium. Camp came along and made the game more like it is now. These games continued to thrive and retained a strong fan following even after the formation of the National Football League (NFL).

The games usually begin towards August end, a few weeks before the NFL games start, and continue through December to the beginning of February. Then of course, Mr. So, they held a chariot race instead, trying out amateurs first and then professionals, and failing miserably to please the audiences with both. Rutgers won this game 6-4. The bowl game they then get to play in depends upon what their conference ranking is. The idea of the Rose Bowl was adapted all around the country, and gave rise to other events like the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl, and the Fiesta Bowl. There have also been many short-lived bowl games like the Oil Bowl, the Salad Bowl, the Cigar Bowl, the Delta Bowl, the Harbor Bowl, and the Raisin Bowl, to mention some.

Before Camp arrived on the scene, football was played with rugby style rules, and it should be noted that the first intercollegiate football game in the USA was played in this style two whole years before an official codified rugby game was played in England. Michigan won 49-0, a lopsided score, which freaked out the organizers into thinking that fans wouldn’t show up for another football match the following year. Another NCAA rule is that the players don’t receive salaries for playing; many, however, receive college scholarships and grants.

After playing a series of bowl games, the annual national champion is decided by a vote of non-playing sport authorities, like sports writers and commentators.

. This game took place on 6 November, 1869, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, between Rutgers College (now known as Rutgers University) and the College of New Jersey (now called Princeton University). The playing rules for all the divisions are decided by the NCAA

Sports :: How to Win at Betting: Sports Gambling Winning Percentage, What You Need to Know

At the end of the month, the 55-percent handicapper would have gone 83-67 for a gain of 9.3 units, while the 60-percent handicapper would have gone 18-12 for a profit of 4.8 units, so the 55-percent handicapper has made nearly twice as much.

If somebody were to ask you if you would rather be a 60-percent handicapper or a 55-percent handicapper, which would you choose? The obvious answer is that it’s better to be a 60-percent handicapper, but that isn’t necessarily true.

The 55-percent handicapper is using what is commonly referred to as the Wal-Mart Approach, which is to have a lot of volume with the expectation of grinding out a small profit. A winning percentage of 55-percent sure doesn’t sound as sexy as a 60-percent handicapper, but if your volume of plays is high enough, it can certainly be much more profitable.

The only statistic that sports bettors should be concerned with is units won, which is the amount of profit, or loss, they have over time, and not worry nearly as much about winning percentage. With baseball season coming back in about 4 months, many sports gamblers will be seeing ads from different sports services claiming winning percentages of 65-percent for baseball, and that’s entirely possibly, but what the services aren’t saying is that the majority of their selections were favorites of -200 or more, turning that 65-percent handicapping into a losing proposition.

Making it more difficult for sports bettors is that some sports services will claim to have won 200 units in a particular sport, but don’t mention that they release 10- or 20-unit plays, along with several 100-unit “locks” at the end of the year if things aren’t going so well and they need something to base next year’s advertising on.

For the bettors that do their own handicapping, however, units won is really the only thing you should be concerned with, as that ultimately is going to translate into the bottom line. And as is the case with the Arkansas-based giant, many times this will be more profitable than being extremely selective and doing a small amount of volume, even if the mark-up is higher.. In the question above, it would be much better to be a 55-percent handicapper if you were playing 150 games a month, as opposed to a 60-percent handicapper playing one game a day

College football coach dies after Parkinson’s battle

She asked friends, family and former players to write letters to Horton’s daughters, sharing their favorite memories of the coach.

“With Coach Horton, it was the way he made us feel outside the meeting rooms and practice fields,” said former Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Paul Zukauskas. “He was a guy that could be tough as a coach, but he’d ask how your family was doing. Ten years after his diagnosis, Horton died surrounded by his two daughters and his wife.

“When I sat down with your dad that day at my school, I knew he was the coach that I wanted to follow,” he wrote to Horton’s daughters.

“They need to be who they are going to be but with the values that Don wanted them to have: education and perseverance.”

“I knew he would look after me, just like he promised my mom, sister and grandmother he would with me being hundreds and hundreds of miles away from the only place I had ever known,” Daniels wrote.

One day, after an NC State game, Horton’s limited dexterity prevented him from being able to button his shirt. “I feel very protective of the girls, and I want them to know how loved they were and how special he was, to be able to be those kind of human beings that will change the world, too.”

Hadley only knew him with this disease. It was his diagnosis that drove the Hortons to “complete the vision” of what their family was going to be, his wife said. I’m not letting in, because it’ll just be me single parenting. As of Wednesday, the fund had raised more than $42,000 for the family.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive lineman Gosder Cherilus and former New York Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka are among Horton’s former players who have donated to the cause.

When Horton went into a hospice home on May 15, family friend Melanie Walker offered a way for the girls to remember their father forever. “In a football world where players are treated as numbers, you treated us as people, and stood out,” wrote Ryan Utzler, former running back at Boston College.

“People can make such a difference in such a short time in life,” she said. . Many of the letters noted the same thing and suggested why: Horton believed in his players, or his men, as he called them.

A dozen or so former players sent the family letters describing what the coach meant to each of them.

Daniels wrote about how Horton came to his high school in Indiana to meet him and how he later helped ease the player’s cross-country move to North Carolina.

“We keep saying over and over we’re going to be all right. The coach offered him career advice and treated him like “part of his family.”

Daniels said he felt safe and cared for. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2006 and retired from the football field in 2013. One of his players, Russell Wilson, now quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, quietly came over to help the coach.

The story left Horton embarrassed, but it inspired his wife to create MagnaReady, a line of shirts with magnetic buttons for people with disabilities.

In addition to her work as the MagnaReady CEO and fighting to raise Parkinson’s awareness, Maura Horton is fighting to keep the memory of her husband alive for her girls.

If you knew Horton or want to share a message, the family asks that you email walkermp@me.com.

“I can assure you that your dad, Don Horton, had a heart of solid gold. You two, along with your mom, Maura, are forever entrenched in it,” Daniels wrote.

One of the most emotional letters came from former Boston College player DuJuan Daniels, a national scout for the New England Patriots.

“He would be very proud of these young men for helping take care of his girls,” Maura Horton said.

Their struggle with the disease also inspired Maura to make the lives of other Parkinson’s patients better.

Horton’s wife hopes his legacy will be a lasting one, for their daughters and the world. They sought in vitro fertilization, and Hadley was born.

“I am happy to call you two my ‘little sisters.’ “

Even after they parted ways, Daniels wrote, Horton called him twice a month in the 14 years that passed since his last game at Boston College.

When Daniels suffered a career-ending knee injury years later, Horton was there to support him, he said. I’m not going to give in,” the 46-year-old said between tears.

When Zukauskas, now a high school football coach in Massachusetts, learned of Horton’s illness, he called the coach’s wife, Maura Horton, to see how he could help.

Zukauskas, Ricky Brown and Al Washington, all former players from Boston College, set up a GoFundMe page in April to raise money for hospital expenses and an education fund for Horton’s two daughters. He really took the time to get to know everybody.”

Football wasn’t the only thing Horton cared about, he added: “He cared about school, he cared about your family, he cared about you, the kid he was welcoming into his family.

What worries Horton’s wife most is whether Libby, 13, and Hadley, 8, will know who their father really was.

Horton, 58, spent a decade coaching at Boston College and six years at North Carolina State University

New documents show Pete Rose bet on baseball as a player, ESPN reports

To be sure, I’m eager to sit down with [MLB commissioner Rob] Manfred to address my entire history — the good and the bad — and my long personal journey since baseball. This closes the door,” said John Dowd, the former federal prosecutor who led MLB’s 1989 investigation.

Major League Baseball has historically reserved its harshest punishment for players who gamble on the sport, claiming such wagers affect baseball’s integrity – even if a player such as Rose bet on his own team to win.

“We knew that [Bertolini] recorded the bets, and that he bet himself, but we never had his records,” Dowd told ESPN. He refused to give them to us.”

Pete Rose’s long insistence that he never gambled on baseball while playing the game may be unraveling, after ESPN unearthed documents it says shows he bet on the Cincinnati Reds while a player-manager in the last year of his illustrious career.

In the five months covered by the notebook, Rose allegedly placed at least one bet on baseball 30 times, as well as placing wagers on other sports, ESPN reported.

Rose issued a statement to ESPN through his lawyer, Raymond Genco.

“Since we submitted the application earlier this year, we committed to MLB that we would not comment on specific matters relating to reinstatement,” the statement read. “I need to maintain that. The actual notebook has remained under court-ordered seal for 26 years and is currently stored in the National Archives’ New York office.

“This does it. “We tried to get them. But the newly surfaced documents could spell an end to the 74-year-old legend’s Cooperstown aspirations.

. Most of the bets were for about $2,000.

Rose, the sport’s all-time leader with 4,256 hits, has been banned from the sport since 1989. Rose, who would certainly be in the Hall of Fame if not for his ban, has long lobbied to be allowed back into the sport. Postal Inspection Service in October 1989. For the next 15 years, he insisted he never gambled, then in 2004 admitted he had but only as a manager. Therefore at this point, it’s not appropriate to comment on any specifics.”

This closes the door,” said John Dowd, the former federal prosecutor

- John Dowd, MLB investigator

Dowd said his team had sought the records in order to prove Rose bet on the sport while a player.

The documents obtained by ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” are copies of pages from a notebook seized from the home of former Rose associate Michael Bertolini during a raid by the U.S. The sports network said the papers’ authenticity has been verified by two people who took part in the raid, which was part of an unrelated mail fraud probe. That meeting likely will come sometime after the All-Star break

The Good, Bad and Ugly About the Commercialization of Amateur Sports

It spotlights young pitchers who throw curve balls that significantly increase the risk of permanent arm and shoulder damage. I was thrilled to meet Lee Elder, the first black golfer invited to participate in the Masters Tournament and one of the most inspiring and courageous athletes in the 20th century, at the NAACP Celebrity Image Awards Golf Challenge at which we showed clips of From the Rough.

However, commercialization has many ugly sides, some old, some new. Local businesses like the Baskin & Robbins store and Dunkin’ Donuts franchises have long enabled young people to secure uniforms and be part of sports teams. I directly support research to enable us to understand the multiple causes of neurological damage from violent hits to the head.

Commercialization enables retired, but still famous, athletes to supplement meager post-career earnings. I support efforts to curb cheating through substance abuse, because it does permanent damage to users, but eliminating performance-enhancing substances is unlikely.

One characteristic of creeping sports commercialization among young athletes is that it distorts, or even destroys, people and institutions it touches. Great college basketball players like Bill Bradley of Princeton, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of UCLA, and Pat Riley of Kentucky, who got college degrees, had great professional basketball careers, but had even better post-basketball lives due to their education.

Commercialization enables many people to participate in otherwise unaffordable recreational sports. He followed a cohort of 20 boys and their families and coaches in Southern California over eight years. Professional sports are of high quality and are great entertainment. While most publicity is about concussions, with baseball recently creating a 7-day disabled list for concussion victims, the cumulative impact of years of violence to athletes’ bodies is a more serious issue. They do not secure educations, as evidenced by the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team’s 30% graduation rate. Michael Sokolove wrote about this in a recent article in the Sunday New York Times Magazine, entitled “Is It Dunk and Done for Perry Jones?,” in which he said that college basketball may not matter any more.

College basketball and football, both revenue-producing sports, effectively rent star players for one year, secure significant revenues for college programs, showcase players for professional teams, and help coaches secure multimillion dollar salaries. Commercialization radically changes the economic benefit of winning for the young athlete, the coaches and parents. In recent years, ESPN has broadcast the Little League baseball playoffs and World Series.

Sadly, violence is also likely to remain a permanent part of the sports landscape, although we can make rules changes that, over time, reduce its severity and frequency. Adult-led commercialization exacerbates the competitive tendencies of young athletes to risk injuries by raising the economic stakes of success.

George Dohrmann recently wrote about basketball’s commercialization for boys as young as 9 years old in his book Playing Their Hearts Out. College admission programs select poorly educated athletes who stay in college for 1-2 years, instead of highly qualified students who could help us overcome our global competitiveness gaps in science, business, and education. Sports betting is more financially lucrative than the sports themselves. We will never eliminate its lure. Some boys ended up having great college experiences, but there were avoidable tragedies, including one boy who was housed with a pedophilic coach and became a convicted criminal because of the commercial opportunity his mother found too good to pass up.. Organized youth sports programs displace more broadly based recreational sports programs.

The commercialization that troubles me is what has crept into youth and college sports. An adult can decide to risk injury to his or her body; an 11-year-old should not be pushed to use athletic techniques that create injury risks he does not understand.

This is a time to celebrate great athletic performances; it is also time for reflection on sports’ roles in young peoples’ lives.

Several events have caused me to think about creeping sports commercialization: the increasingly lucrative NCAA tournament and the increasing sense that college basketball is a one-year commercial way station for athletes on the way to professional basketball; Barry Bonds’ perjury trial relative to his use of performance-enhancing drugs; business-sponsored teams beginning spring baseball practice; and continuing publicity about sports concussions.

I do not begrudge professional team owners or athletes the economic rewards they have secured. The use of performance-enhancing substances has always been with us, and probably always will be: Too much money is at stake
