New documents show Pete Rose bet on baseball as a player, ESPN reports

To be sure, I’m eager to sit down with [MLB commissioner Rob] Manfred to address my entire history — the good and the bad — and my long personal journey since baseball. This closes the door,” said John Dowd, the former federal prosecutor who led MLB’s 1989 investigation.

Major League Baseball has historically reserved its harshest punishment for players who gamble on the sport, claiming such wagers affect baseball’s integrity – even if a player such as Rose bet on his own team to win.

“We knew that [Bertolini] recorded the bets, and that he bet himself, but we never had his records,” Dowd told ESPN. He refused to give them to us.”

Pete Rose’s long insistence that he never gambled on baseball while playing the game may be unraveling, after ESPN unearthed documents it says shows he bet on the Cincinnati Reds while a player-manager in the last year of his illustrious career.

In the five months covered by the notebook, Rose allegedly placed at least one bet on baseball 30 times, as well as placing wagers on other sports, ESPN reported.

Rose issued a statement to ESPN through his lawyer, Raymond Genco.

“Since we submitted the application earlier this year, we committed to MLB that we would not comment on specific matters relating to reinstatement,” the statement read. “I need to maintain that. The actual notebook has remained under court-ordered seal for 26 years and is currently stored in the National Archives’ New York office.

“This does it. “We tried to get them. But the newly surfaced documents could spell an end to the 74-year-old legend’s Cooperstown aspirations.

. Most of the bets were for about $2,000.

Rose, the sport’s all-time leader with 4,256 hits, has been banned from the sport since 1989. Rose, who would certainly be in the Hall of Fame if not for his ban, has long lobbied to be allowed back into the sport. Postal Inspection Service in October 1989. For the next 15 years, he insisted he never gambled, then in 2004 admitted he had but only as a manager. Therefore at this point, it’s not appropriate to comment on any specifics.”

This closes the door,” said John Dowd, the former federal prosecutor

Dowd said his team had sought the records in order to prove Rose bet on the sport while a player.

The documents obtained by ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” are copies of pages from a notebook seized from the home of former Rose associate Michael Bertolini during a raid by the U.S. The sports network said the papers’ authenticity has been verified by two people who took part in the raid, which was part of an unrelated mail fraud probe. That meeting likely will come sometime after the All-Star break

The Good, Bad and Ugly About the Commercialization of Amateur Sports

It spotlights young pitchers who throw curve balls that significantly increase the risk of permanent arm and shoulder damage. I was thrilled to meet Lee Elder, the first black golfer invited to participate in the Masters Tournament and one of the most inspiring and courageous athletes in the 20th century, at the NAACP Celebrity Image Awards Golf Challenge at which we showed clips of From the Rough.

However, commercialization has many ugly sides, some old, some new. Local businesses like the Baskin & Robbins store and Dunkin’ Donuts franchises have long enabled young people to secure uniforms and be part of sports teams. I directly support research to enable us to understand the multiple causes of neurological damage from violent hits to the head.

Commercialization enables retired, but still famous, athletes to supplement meager post-career earnings. I support efforts to curb cheating through substance abuse, because it does permanent damage to users, but eliminating performance-enhancing substances is unlikely.

One characteristic of creeping sports commercialization among young athletes is that it distorts, or even destroys, people and institutions it touches. Great college basketball players like Bill Bradley of Princeton, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of UCLA, and Pat Riley of Kentucky, who got college degrees, had great professional basketball careers, but had even better post-basketball lives due to their education.

Commercialization enables many people to participate in otherwise unaffordable recreational sports. He followed a cohort of 20 boys and their families and coaches in Southern California over eight years. Professional sports are of high quality and are great entertainment. While most publicity is about concussions, with baseball recently creating a 7-day disabled list for concussion victims, the cumulative impact of years of violence to athletes’ bodies is a more serious issue. They do not secure educations, as evidenced by the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team’s 30% graduation rate. Michael Sokolove wrote about this in a recent article in the Sunday New York Times Magazine, entitled “Is It Dunk and Done for Perry Jones?,” in which he said that college basketball may not matter any more.

College basketball and football, both revenue-producing sports, effectively rent star players for one year, secure significant revenues for college programs, showcase players for professional teams, and help coaches secure multimillion dollar salaries. Commercialization radically changes the economic benefit of winning for the young athlete, the coaches and parents. In recent years, ESPN has broadcast the Little League baseball playoffs and World Series.

Sadly, violence is also likely to remain a permanent part of the sports landscape, although we can make rules changes that, over time, reduce its severity and frequency. Adult-led commercialization exacerbates the competitive tendencies of young athletes to risk injuries by raising the economic stakes of success.

George Dohrmann recently wrote about basketball’s commercialization for boys as young as 9 years old in his book Playing Their Hearts Out. College admission programs select poorly educated athletes who stay in college for 1-2 years, instead of highly qualified students who could help us overcome our global competitiveness gaps in science, business, and education. Sports betting is more financially lucrative than the sports themselves. We will never eliminate its lure. Some boys ended up having great college experiences, but there were avoidable tragedies, including one boy who was housed with a pedophilic coach and became a convicted criminal because of the commercial opportunity his mother found too good to pass up.. Organized youth sports programs displace more broadly based recreational sports programs.

The commercialization that troubles me is what has crept into youth and college sports. An adult can decide to risk injury to his or her body; an 11-year-old should not be pushed to use athletic techniques that create injury risks he does not understand.

This is a time to celebrate great athletic performances; it is also time for reflection on sports’ roles in young peoples’ lives.

Several events have caused me to think about creeping sports commercialization: the increasingly lucrative NCAA tournament and the increasing sense that college basketball is a one-year commercial way station for athletes on the way to professional basketball; Barry Bonds’ perjury trial relative to his use of performance-enhancing drugs; business-sponsored teams beginning spring baseball practice; and continuing publicity about sports concussions.

I do not begrudge professional team owners or athletes the economic rewards they have secured. The use of performance-enhancing substances has always been with us, and probably always will be: Too much money is at stake

You can still find offshore oil rig jobs even in the middle of this recession. With the amount of money being spent in the oil industry, you can bet that there will be offshore drilling jobs available to a fit, hardworking young man.

Offshore oil rig jobs are like any other career – you start at the bottom and work your way up. Even though the Department of Labor will call you a general laborer, you’ll be earning somewhere around $45,000 a year, better than some white collar jobs.

Unlike most physical jobs, you actually have a pretty good career path. Offshore drilling companies like Transocean are still deploying new oil rigs and hiring workers. You will be doing a lot of hard, dirty work and heavy lifting. Instead, go for a certified trade like an electrician or mechanic. Large oil companies like Exxon spend $79 million everyday looking for new oil fields. This could get you highly paid jobs in the electrical department or motor room. In this line of work, you want to look for entry level roustabout jobs. You will also get the chance to help the derrickhands and drillers, giving you the experience to be promoted to a driller yourself.

Even without experience, getting offshore oil rig jobs is easier than getting a job as a rocket scientist. Work hard and smart for one to two years, and you could be promoted to a roughneck. Even though OPEC is complaining that oil at $40/barrel is too cheap. Depending on where the oil rig is located, you may need vaccinations, first aid certifications, offshore survival certifications, firefighting certifications and helicopter underwater escape training certifications. Remember to read up a little bit on maritime law. Good cooks and medics are two other entry level positions always welcome on an oil rig.

. A certified welder could make $60,000 working on an offshore oil rig. Don’t forget to check with a good tax lawyer – at one point of time, there were very good tax incentives for people taking up offshore jobs. Worldwide, $400 billion will be spent in 2009 looking for more oil..

Gambling Advice

Euro wheels have a single green “0″ space, American wheels have the additional “00.” The addition of a single potential winning number changes the game’s odds dramatically enough that choosing an American wheel when a Euro game is available is downright stupid. That is far from the truth – because video poker involves a huge skill element on the part of the player, it is not only one of the most fun machine games available, certain versions of the game can be played at a positive expectation. The difference between the two is intent. Slots players interested in slightly higher odds of winning are advised to always bet the maximum amount available; the larger a player’s price-per-pull, the better the odds of winning become, and the larger the jackpots become as well. Let us show you how to play it smarter, or at least enjoy your play a little more.

The trouble many gamblers have with craps is the complex betting surface – even roulette, with its dozens of numbers, different colors and combinations, and rapid spins of the wheel, doesn’t confuse gamblers the way a craps surface can. Because of its fast pace and the likelihood of plenty of ups and downs for the player, baccarat is the title of choice for thrill seekers and aggressive gamblers.

Forget that some slot machines give the player terrible odds. That’s the definition of strategy, after all – a set of tactics meant to produce a specific effect. The house edge on the bets known as “banker” and “player” is between 1 and 1.5% (in a game played with standard casino rules). Despite a reputation as a complex and expensive gamble, craps is really a misunderstood luck-based dice game with a few decent wagers and a lot of entertainment value.

In some parts of the world, baccarat is becoming rare, though it is still a very popular choice in Europe and parts of Asia. While casino games are designed to turn a profit for their operators, there is no difference between an hour at a slot machine and an hour at the local movie theater – except that at the end of the hour, a slot machine could potentially put more money in your pocket. Beating the house consistently at the game sometimes called 21 requires serious study. Forget that the potential for losing is so high that gambling jurisdictions require game programming that guarantees a minimum return. Other games in the casino give players a better statistical chance at winning money or breaking even, but big returns aren’t why people play slots.

Gambling Zeus slot machineGambling is just another form of entertainment, albeit one that’s highly-regulated, potentially profitable for participants, and carries a long cultural tradition in many parts of the world. The excitement around a craps table comes from the fact that players can wager both for and against one another, the high likelihood of winning and losing streaks, and the large bets placed by some craps bettors interested in the sometimes quick pace of the game.

Below are short breakdowns about our guides to the most popular casino games, listed in increasing order of game complexity. Roulette is one of those classic casino contests that everyone can picture, one that most people probably picture when they imagine a casino floor. We at GamblingAdvice.org want to make gamblers time playing their chosen game more entertaining. Roulette may not have the global appeal of slots, but any gambler who spends five minutes at a live roulette game will understand its addictive qualities. Yes, blackjack is beatable, but bettors looking for easy money should look elsewhere. The same can’t be said for the latest Hollywood blockbuster.

All casino games (even totally luck-based contests like slots or roulette) can be played in different ways to achieve different results. Generally, the outcome of a round of slot play is based on luck. Though all video poker is based on simple draw poker rules, different titles include wrinkles like wild cards or additional cards beyond the standard 5-count, and these small changes impact strategy in a big way. Roulette props are memorable, especially when the game is played on ornate wheels in the bigger European casinos or in the center of dozens of busy tables on a Las Vegas gaming floor. Learning the meanings of craps jargon as well as the odds and value of the game’s many different ways to wager is a huge first step in the direction of learning craps strategy, and we offer this advice free of charge and without bias.

The Simple Pleasures of Slot Machines

Since slot machines are pleasurable games based on luck, strategy for slots revolves around increasing the value of money spent on them and stretch a slot player’s budget to give them the most entertainment for their bankroll. However, other wagers are among the more advantageous wagers gamblers will find. Ignore the itch that suggests slots are low-class games. The writers here at GamblingAdvice.org have played every casino game under the sun and can offer tips to make these games more enjoyable and (maybe) more lucrative. That means some video poker players actually hold an advantage over the casino. Whether that effect is an increased chance of winning at the blackjack table or the stretching of a budget to increase time in front of a slot machine, we offer advice to help gamblers achieve it.

Like the other gambles covered in more detail throughout our site, our roulette section includes everything from tips on which bets to make and which to avoid all the way to money management tactics and etiquette advice. Our strategy for roulette considers both players who like risk and those looking to stretch their bankroll as far as it will go. The cards that appear for the player and the house are not something a bettor can work around – what they can do is play the game a certain way to maximize their chances of winning.

There is no skill element in the basic slot machine game, though bonus rounds and additional features in modern slots give them a skill-based element. Rather than relying on the same old recycled “how to beat the casino” advice found everywhere else, trust us to share what we’ve learned about gambling in a way that’s both comprehensive and easy to apply.

Because craps is one of the faster-paced games on this list, newcomers to the game are encouraged to learn as much about it as they can – this includes advice on how to control wagers to extend playing time and fact-based tips on the game’s best and worst bets, odds-wise. Because of the game’s simple rules and pay table, it is easy to learn and can be played with strategy, though like other luck-based games the best tactics involve bankroll management and increasing entertainment value rather than finding a way to beat the house.

. If, as Merriam-Webster says, “advice” means any recommendation about a future action, “gambling advice” is nothing but tips to help gamblers have more fun in the future.

Based on the rules of draw poker, video poker involves a bettor making choices in order to form the highest-value poker hand possible from the cards they’re dealt. The reason this kind of game is the most popular anywhere in the world is because it is a lot of fun to play.

The Quick Ups and Downs of Baccarat

To some people, the notion of “gambling advice” is oxymoronic. Some game’s pay tables are tilted in favor of the house, while others favor players – reading these tables and finding games that benefit players a little more is another important aspect of video poker strategy. After all, baccarat is the game of James Bond, a game with small advantages that can result in massive wins and losses. We cover basic and advanced blackjack strategy and provide bettors tips on how to use basic card-counting skills to tip the scales in their favor. This may not matter as much to a slots player who is looking to stretch their $50 or $100 for a long period of time – for that sort of player, sound strategy would involve finding a machine they enjoy and placing wagers that won’t dry up their bankroll too quickly.

Roulette: Devil’s Wheel or Safe Bet?

Blackjack strategy, as developed by math geniuses in the middle of the 20th century, is a sure-fire way to decrease the house’s advantage. We humans are captivated by shiny things, and the bouncing silver ball of roulette is the perfect prop to keep gamblers in thrall.

There’s something that can’t be avoided when discussing roulette strategy – many of this game’s bets offer odds so bad they should be the domain of the very stupid or the very wealthy. Though these six titles are the most popular among casino gamblers, they are by no means the only ones we cover at GamblingAdvice.org, but a representative sample of what we offer bettors looking to have more fun at the casino.

Whether it’s called chemin de fer, punto banco, or plain old baccarat, this card game is designed for and usually played by high-rollers. Rather than focusing on beating the house consistently, gamblers interested in blackjack strategy can focus instead on the tips we provide to make the game more fun and (just a little bit) better odds-wise.

The Mythical (and Magical) Game of Blackjack

Another casino game standard-bearer, blackjack today has a well-known reputation as a beatable casino contest, thanks in no small part to card-counting teams glamorized in popular culture over the past couple of decades. Any slot machine advice that suggests there is some method for beating a machine or finding one that’s “hot” or “due” for a jackpot is garbage – slot player strategy means controlling your money and knowing how to bet. Because roulette offers both very conservative and very aggressive wagering options, strategy is important for bettors who want to leave the casino with their rent money safely tucked away.

Learning to establish a slot budget isn’t difficult, and bankroll management can be scaled up and down to meet any wallet size. More often than not, the intent of the other guys is sales or advertisement.

The purpose of advice is to share what one knows about a topic with someone who expects to encounter that subject in the future. The most basic piece of advice any new roulette player needs to learn is to seek out and always play on European-style wheels rather than American-style. Advantage gamblers, pay attention.

The Zeus Slot Machine – Gambling at Its Finest

Along with the spinning roulette wheel, the rolling dice used in games of craps are the major icons of casino play around the world. To these people’s way of thinking, gambling is a zero-sum game in which a casino presents rigged games designed to take customer’s money. The luck of the draw is a big part of the game, but knowledge about the statistical likelihood of drawing certain hands plays a huge part as well.

Because video poker machines are often banked alongside slots, gamblers unfamiliar with how these games work may assume they’re something like slots – simplistic, sucker bets with a high casino advantage. Slots are the casino equivalent of games like Candy Crush or Angry Birds.

Like slots, the luck-based action of roulette is fun as any game on any casino floor. Similar to video poker, blackjack is a card game that involves both a skill and a luck element. This is especially true for bettors interested in a more conservative approach.

Learning how to play video poker also means learning how to interpret features like game rules and pay tables. This game is a favorite among our writers, and we believe our advice regarding video poker play is easy-to-read and even easier to put into practice.

Video Poker, the Advantage Gambler’s Favorite

Broadly-speaking, two categories of casino advice exist on the Internet: one category includes fact-based strategy guides and listicles on a variety of gambling topics, the other is completely worthless.
